I built my first knife when I was 12 years old. I had an old mill file and a hand cranked grinding stone. I didn’t know anything about annealing, heat treating or grinding bevels. I just spun that grinding stone against that file until I had a knife shape that was acceptable to a 12 year old. I cut a piece of 2x2 to use as a handle and filed a scrap of aluminum as a guard. JB welded everything together and I had a hand made knife.
I proudly carried that knife along with my folding scout knife on camping trips. My scout master asked me if I was planning on skinning an Alligator with it.
Fast forward 50 years and a show call “Forged in Fire” caught my eye. Yes I was one of the many. It rekindled my intrest in knife making. Seeing as how I was pretty handy with building things I jumped back in.
I used a file to grind down a piece of 1080 steel and heat treated it in a coffee can forge and made a handle from some seasoned oak fire wood. I quickly moved to a 1x30 belt grinder and built a better forge with fire brick. I then got a band saw etc, etc, etc.
I enjoy the process of creating a useful piece of handmade art. As time goes on I continue to get better at this kraft but will never reach a level of perfection. It’s a journey to be enjoyed.
